House update

Here are some updates of our house. The top picture is the view off of the upstairs deck as it looks to the human eye.

The one below is the camera view that shows part of the view we have up on the hill where we live. This is the back showing part of the back yard and the second level patio.

A view of the Olympics from the right side of the second level patio.

The front of the house.

Things are really moving along quickly. Because of some of the add ons that we chose the closing date has been pushed back to March 26th. That is good for us so that we can sale (SELL) in the spring rather than later winter. I just wish the practice could have gone this quickly!

What a great view! Okay...have to point out that you mean "so we can sell" in the spring, not sale. (That's a UT thing my relatives always get confused...sale vs. sell.) How exciting to see the progress on your home. It looks great!

Sorry Jill, your comment about confusing sale and sell is not just "a Utah thing" as you put it. It is a common mistake all over the country, regardless of where you are from. I see it out here in Maryland all the time. In fact, many of the grammatical errors that mormons often blame on "utahns" are not isolated to the Beehive State alone. I am going to rererence you to Carson's previous post on this topic so that I don't have to rehash everything again. http://conservativecakeliberalicing.blogspot.com/2007/08/utah-mormons.html
I feel his post and many of the comments did a good job at clarifying much of the untrue stereotypes people place on Utahns. Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine.

Well, I KNOW how much people who grew up in Utah like to dispute the Utah-isms, but I will have to agree with Jill on this one - only not so much in writing but in speaking. I think that maybe someone might write differently than they speak - I have heard these sorts of phrases dozens and dozens of times:
"He hurt my fillings."
"I need to pill this carrot."
"I saw this rill big tree on the mount'in."
and so on...
I think it is less a grammatical error than a pronunciation error. The people who I have heard say these also have Utah accents, which seems to not exist in all areas of Utah.

I agree with you Collette on Utahns having a different accent. I have been corrected myself many times at mispronouncing some of those words. But, it is an issue of accents, not grammar, that's why Carson's "sale vs sell" issue isn't a Utah thing. As for accents, just go to Texas, or Georgia, or Boston, or Minnesota to find similar differences. Many areas in the country have distinct accents. The Utah accent is kind of a country, red-neck accent. I enjoy hearing the different accents from around the country. Unlike those that bag on Utah and think it is a sign of ignorance, I feel it adds spice to conversations. One of my favorite accents is the New England accent. When we went to Maine last year, I really enjoyed hearing them pronounce Bar Harbor as "Bah Hahbuh" and clam chowder as "Clam Chowduh". While I'm on it, one of the most notable differences with the Utah accent is dropping the "g" at the end of words, like "huntin'" or "runnin'". Or, dropping the "t" in the middle of words like "moun'ain" (mountain) or "Brigh-on" for Brighton.

Wow. Touchy! I just pointed out that it was a UT thing that my relatives always got confused, as to sale vs. sell. I have plenty of family living in UT and I feel totally fine with teasing about the errors in their speech, as does my husband with teasing people in WA who say "a couple of three weeks ago" (do they mean 6 weeks or 2 weeks ago?). No way did I claim grammar/speech to be perfect anywhere else. Yes, I did read Carson's blog before regarding his pet peeve with Utahisms. I do agree with a lot of Carson's points. But, if you were to go visit my relatives in UT you'd understand where I'm coming from.

Hope that my post made sense and that it didn't come out rude...

Everybody knows that Jill is a very contentious person. Even when your post sounds nice I throw a little bit of sarcasm or disdain in to make it more realistic and true to form ;)

I also agree that there are Utah accents and phrases. It rocked my world when I realized that Deer Creek Reservoir was not Deer Crick. I don't say the dreaded "we was," and didn't even notice it until my wife pointed it out a couple of years ago. Those imperfect English phrases that I used to say, I blame solely on my Intermountain West upbringing (notice that I didn't say Utah).
